The Effect of Radiographic Changes in Thoroughbred Yearlings on Future Racing Performance

چکیده
Palmar supracondylar lysis of the third metacarpus, enthesophytes on the proximal sesamoid bones, proximal dorsal P1 fragments in the hind fetlocks, and dorsal medial intercarpal joint disease in Thoroughbred yearlings are associated with decreased likelihood of starting at least one race during the 2or 3-year-old years. Racing performance after arthroscopic removal of apical sesamoid fracture fragments in Thoroughbred horses age < 2 years: 151 cases (1989--2002).
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Studies on arthroscopic removal of apical proximal sesamoid fracture fragments in Thoroughbred (TB) horses age > or = 2 years have reported a high success rate. However, there are no reports documenting the racing prognosis of TB horses that undergo such surgery as weanlings or yearlings. OBJECTIVES To describe the incidence of apical proximal sesamoid fractures i...
متن کاملAssociations Between Yearling Body Measurements and Career Racing Performance in Thoroughbred Racehorses
Yearling morphometric measurements and variables related to career racing performance were collected on 260 Thoroughbreds to determine correlations between and among these traits. Morphometric measurements were adjusted to 365 days based on interpolation from adjacent age points and included wither and hip height, body length, distal limb length, cannon circumference, heartgirth circumference, ...
متن کاملRadiographic changes in Thoroughbred yearlings in South Africa.
This study involves the evaluation of pre-purchase radiographic studies of South African Thoroughbred yearlings. Radiographic changes were recorded and compared with similar international studies. The study differs from other studies in that a lower prevalence of pedal osteitis (1.26%), dorsal osteochondral fragmentation of the metatarsophalangeal joint (1.60%), distal metacarpal sagittal ridge...
متن کاملThoroughbred Growth and Future Racing Performance
The success of a Thoroughbred racehorse is determined by a multitude of factors, many of which are impossible to evaluate. Thoroughbreds are commonly selected for racing ability by pedigree and conformation analysis. There have been few studies associating growth and body size with racing performance (Pagan, 1998a; Cain, 2006; Smith et al., 2006). The genetic make-up, or genotype, contributes t...
متن کامل48 - Veterinary aspects of training Thoroughbred racehorses
Thoroughbred racing evolved in England over 200 years ago and now exists in over 50 countries. A comparison of the size of Thoroughbred flat racing industries between some of the major racing countries based on foal crop, number of races and starters, prize money and betting turnover is illustrated in Table 48.1. All facets of the Thoroughbred racing industry rely heavily on veterinary input, w...
